Leesa, fyi ... the Hairy woodpecker is a little larger than the downy. Of both species, the Males have Red splotches on the backs of their heads, whereas the females do not. I just couldn't tell the size ... cuz they look some much alike til you see them together. I love them. We have them here.

This is a Hairy Woodpecker. The Downy woodpecker has a red patch on his head.
